Our approach

The Firestarter Difference.

We don’t create content. We transform it into story — full of the heart and authenticity that makes us care. And behind every story is a process, built by experience.

The process

Flexible, scalable and collaborative — in six steps.

Thousands of hours interviewing and more than a decade developing stories built this. We’re still learning.

  1. 01

    Listen Working collaboratively

From the outset we work closely with you to understand key audiences and stakeholders, the questions we need to answer, and the central messages — including the narratives we're looking to shift. We define project goals together and build a strategic plan for collecting the story elements that will answer them.

  2. 02

    Interview Engagement & inquiry

We conduct documentary-style interviews, translating strategic objectives into questions that elicit the information, emotion and messages at the heart of the narrative. We seek a diverse group of voices, from the ground to leadership, and capture authentic footage of people in action to illustrate what they share.

  3. 03

    Distill Narrative building blocks

Every interview is transcribed to provide a roadmap for the material. We organize hundreds of pages of transcripts into Selects by theme, and from those Master Selects develop a narrative storyboard — the script for the story we're building. Several rounds of distillation later, it's ready to become video.

  4. 04

    Produce The alchemy of story

The storyboard passes from story development to our editing team, who create a preliminary cut. Story development reviews, tightens the narrative, refines messaging and flow. We think of peeling back the layers to reveal the most compelling essence as storytelling alchemy: shapeless content becomes story.

  5. 05

    Refine Co-creation

Collaboration is foundational at every stage, but most differentiating here. We move minds by moving hearts, and you are a partner in that. Together we refine the narrative backbone to get it right strategically and emotionally, and only then add music, b-roll and graphics. We iterate until we're all thrilled.

  6. 06

Launch & Analyze A collective endeavor

Our stories headline events, live on the front pages of websites, and bring narratives to life across social channels. Together we analyze the metrics that matter — engagement, donations, campus visits, sign-ups — and adjust. Long-term relationships build a deep, flexible story archive to draw on as new objectives emerge.

The Firestarter Promise

“If you’re not thrilled, we’re not done yet.

Our intensely collaborative process engages clients as partners. Together we create crisp, compelling, shareable film storytelling that we’re all thrilled with — or we’re not done yet.

Good to know

Questions we’re asked most.

How involved is the client during production?

Very. Collaboration is foundational at every stage: we define goals together, share Master Selects and the narrative storyboard before we edit, review story-development cuts with you, and iterate until we're all thrilled. You are a partner in the story, not a spectator.

What does the Distill step mean?

Every interview is transcribed and organized by theme into Selects. From those we build Master Selects and then a narrative storyboard, the script for the film we're building, before any editing begins. Several rounds of distillation turn hundreds of pages of transcript into a story that holds.

What if we're not happy with a cut?

We keep refining. Our promise is simple: if you're not thrilled, we're not done yet. Story development reviews come first, then music, b-roll and graphics, so feedback lands where it matters most.

What do we receive at the end of a project?

Final films in every format your channels need, social cuts where they're part of the scope, and an organized archive of interviews and footage. Long-term relationships build a deep, flexible story archive you can draw on as new objectives emerge.
